Postcards from the Collection of Jack Whitmeyer

A long-time volunteer at the Los Angeles Maritime Museum, Jack Whitmeyer (John Lawrence Whitmeyer, 1921-2012), was continually sought out for his encyclopedic knowledge of ships and of the newspaper coverage of many twentieth-century vessels. He was a lifetime collector of printed information on ships, ranging from newspaper clippings to photographs, postcards, brochures and books.

The John L. Whitmeyer Collection contains photographs, both those he collected from others and his own images, of naval ships, both foreign and domestic, dating from the mid-twentieth century. It also contains newsclippings on a wide range of maritime topics. The postcards of ocean liners, naval ships, cargo ships, ferry boats, sailing yachts, lighthouses and local areas such as maritime San Pedro, Los Angeles Harbor and Catalina Island are a special group within his collection. Most of these are mid-twentieth century, but there is a small group of cards from the Great White Fleet era, circa 1908. Lighthouses are also featured.
