Description of Photograph:
U.S.S. New Jersey, an Iowa—Class battleship, was a support vessel used in the task force called Fast Carrier Task Force in World War II's Pacific Theater.
Background Information:
The current American Navy originated in 1775 with a small Continental Navy used during the American Revolution to fight the British. Today the US Navy is one of the largest in the world, with over 300,000 personnel, many different types of ships, including frigates, aircraft carriers, and submarines.
