Description of Photograph:
The North Pier Light was built in 1909 and has operated since 1910. It was built to mark the end of the north pier to ensure the safety of ships entering Duluth Canal.
Background Information:
Lighthouses have been used for centuries to aid sailors in navigating dangerous waters. Many styles of lighthouse have developed over time, offering a variety of interesting stuctures. The United States has many notable lighhouses, some which remain active today.
