Los Angeles Maritime Museum Research Library
Object Type:
The Islander. Postcard from Jack Whitmeyer Collection.
Collection Description:
Built in 1941, the ferry building was home to the Islander, a diesel ferry built in 1916.
Description of Photograph:
First called the Vashon Island, and later the Mercer, the Islander originally sailed the Duwamish River in Washington. After the Vincent Thomas Bridge opended, the Islander became obsolete and was converted into a fishing barge. It was later destroyed by a fire in 1974.
Background Information:
The Islander ferried people between San Pedro and Terminal Island until 1963, prior to construction of the Vincent Thomas Bridge. The fares were collected in tokens and a one-way trip took about 5 minutes.
