Collection Description:
Today San Pedro Harbor is home to one of the United States' busiest ports. The Port of Los Angeles opened in 1907.
Description of Photograph:
San Pedro has a long history of shipping. Before the port was built, cargo would be ferried to shore as ships could run aground in the mudflats. In the 1870s Phineas Banning laid the foundations of the Port of Los Angeles by dredging the channel.
