Collection Description:
Rear Admiral C.S. Sperry, Commander—in—Chief of the Atlantic Fleet. Just prior to that appointment he was President of the Naval War College (Newport, R.I.) from 1903 to 1906.
Description of Photograph:
U.S.S. Kansas, a pre—dreadnaught battleship, was launched in 1905 and re—commissioned in 1907 as part of the Great White Fleet.
Background Information:
In 1907 President Theodore Roosevelt deployed a fleet of 16 white battleships to tour the globe to display America's power and naval might. This world tour also gave the US Navy the opportunity to test its new battleships at sea. On its world tour the Great White Fleet visited New Zealand, the Philippines, Brazil, Japan,and Gibralter, among other places.
