Description of Photograph:
The U.S.S. Helena was decommissioned in 1963 after serving in the Korean War and scrapped in 1975.
Background Information:
The current American Navy originated in 1775 with a small Continental Navy used during the American Revolution to fight the British. Today the US Navy is one of the largest in the world, with over 300,000 personnel, many different types of ships, including frigates, aircraft carriers, and submarines.
