Research Guides: Naval Ships

The following books and resources are available for use by researchers and staff in the Reading Room of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum Research Library. Titles are representative of the Library's collection of books on naval ships; other literatures are available but do not appear in these lists. The books are resources for description, with photographs for positive identification, some with line drawings or specifications. Magazines, journals, and web sites listed here contain useful and detailed articles on ships histories. For more subjects and topics in the collection, see the Library web home page.

Battleships, Cruisers, Destroyers, Submarines, and other Warships
Reference Works
These books are selected for their specific focus on navy vessels. For books that include ships in the U.S. Coast Guard and the Merchant Marine, see the Research Guides for those topics. For books on merchant ships, both sail and steam, yachts, and histories of those vessel types, see the Research Guide: Maritime History of Sail and Steam.

Selected books on the histories of individual ships are listed alphabetically by title, including vessels from American, British, German, and Japanese navies.

Cruise books published by individual navy vessels from 1951 - 1986.

Histories of the Navy
Selected books on the histories of the United States Navy and Naval operations are listed alphabetically by title, with an emphasis on the World Wars.

Find articles about naval ships in this alphabetical list.

Archives and Manuscripts
