Surfing is a sport, culture, and a way of life with its own clothing, music, and vocabulary. From the ancient Polynesians with their hand-carved surfboards to the sleek computer-designed fiberglass boards of today, surfing has reached across the centuries and around the globe. The image of the surfer has helped to promote the Southern California lifestyle in American popular culture.
We hope you enjoy this exhibit as an introduction to surfing. We encourage you to learn more about surfing and legendary surfers, and maybe even “catch a wave” yourself!
Special thanks to the International Surfing Museum, Huntington Beach for the loan of classic boards. The exhibit ran through September 18, 2005.
