The Los Angeles Maritime Institute, founded in 1992, is an educational affiliate of the Museum. Its TopSail Youth Program uses sail training to provide youth with real-life challenges that develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to live healthy and productive lives. During the 2000-2001 school year, TopSail provided 5655 youth sail days to 78 different schools and youth organizations.

The educational setting is aboard the 70-foot topsail schooner SWIFT OF IPSWICH and the 94-foot gaff-topsail schooner BILL OF RIGHTS.

As the program grows, so does the fleet!

On April 27, 2002 the twin brigantines IRVING JOHNSON and EXY JOHNSON were launched. These custom-built 90-foot sail training vessels were constructed at the Brigantine Boatworks on the Museum grounds. Named in honor of sail training pioneers Irving and Exy Johnson, the brigantines will soon begin full-time service in the award-winning TopSail program.
