At Work:
The Art of California Labor

The Los Angeles Maritime Museum and the Harry Bridges Institute were pleased to present a new exhibit "At Work: The Art of California Labor". The opening reception was held at the Maritime Museum (6th Street and Harbor Blvd) on Thursday, February 17 at 7:00 pm

During the twentieth century, California witnessed several pivotal events in labor history. At the same time, talented artists dedicated themselves to illustrating these struggles and triumphs through mediums such as photographs, prints, woodcuts, and murals. The "At Work" exhibit will include traveling works of art courtesy of the California Exhibition Resource Alliance, complemented by never-before exhibited photographs and paintings from the collections of the Maritime Museum and the Harry Bridges institute. Our visitors will have a chance to experience these pieces not only for their artistic merit, but for what they can teach us about the history of labor in California.

A series of public programs beginning on March 25, accompanied the exhibit. Featured speakers included Lauren Coodley, author of "Orange Groves and Jails: Upton Sinclair’s California" Laura presented a lecture and book signing at the Museum. Visit www.laurencoodley.com for more information.

Major Funding for "At Work" was generously provided by the James Irvine Foundation, The Walter and Elise Hass Fund, and San Francisco State University. The exhibit ran through mid-April.
